When I insert an image using dropbox's link, I get this:

By default in dropbox, anyone having the link can see the image.

Is there another useful setting?

That's because that's not an image link - it's a link to the dropbox resource page.

You need to capture the actual image link (Copy Image Address from that page) which is:
