I would like to purchase a domain name to host in our own server or anywhere in the cloud. Would anyone recommend a registrar that provides managing tools yet gives you hosting flexibility?

Rick has made recommendations but I can't find my notes.

My question is about a recommended registrar. We want to buy a new name and host on a server we have in house. We had a bad experience with a bundle that we later had trouble moving to another host.

Any suggestions for that?

I don't know about how this is done in Panama, but most registrars here in Norway don't force you in any way to use their servers, although they will usually give you an offer for this.

Unfortunately my favorite registrar is a local one, and their website is only in Norwegian. If you send me a private email, I can ask them if they can register the domain for you.

Hosting and DNS management are two completely separate things and you certainly don't have to use the same service to do either.

For DNS management (and domain registration) I use DNSimple. They have really nice and simple DNS administration that makes it easy to shift DNS names around. They raised their prices a while back though and their pricing is not so great any more. I'm still on their older grandfathered in pricing but have limits with that pricing for how many domains I can manage. Their pricing isn't outrageous but not cheap especially compared to free with some of the other choices that come with your typical domain registrar account.

FWIW, most DNS registrars these days include DNS management for the domains you register so you can do most of the DNS assignments right there. I also still have a few domains on DirectNic and they have a simple DNS manager. I imagine any registrar these days has something similar. I continue to use DirectNic because they are cheap and have been reliable/trustworthy - most of my newer domains I register here now.

If you don't mind the DNSimple pricing I think that's the best choice for managing servers otherwise any registrar you trust will work. Many large organizations use DNSimple because of the nice interface and they even have an API that can be used to access and manipulate Domain management and registration. Especially for large installs they are a go-to recommendation from other developers - that's how I landed there 10 years ago or so. Don't go with the cheapest or most shady operation. Find something that's been around for a long time without any public record of trust violations.

As to hosting VPS servers - Vultr is my choice by a long shot. Cheap, very efficient and reliable. Been using them for 2 years after moving off my physical server which has been one of the best choices I've made in a long while 😃
