Hi all,

I've released HTML Help Builder 5.08 today, which is primarily a maintenance release.

About Help Builder

Help Builder is an easy to use documentation generation tool that uses Markdown and a live synced preview to let you quickly and interactively build help content. The editor lets you focus on your content, with easy to type Markdown text along with a set of toolbar helpers to make it easy embed content and markup text. You can easily embed images via the clipboard, the image picker or the built-in screen capture. Cross topic links are easy with the topic picker and code snippets can be easily formatted and displayed with syntax colored code. Output can be generated to a self contained static and mobile friendly Web site that's ready to be copied to a Web site, or you can create CHM help files or Word or PDF documents.

Version 5.08 background

Help Builder's been on the backburner for quite a while up until recently, and in this release I spent the last few weeks going through the bug and quirk lists and cleaning up tons of little issues and nits. As most of you know I use Help Builder for most of my documentation, and I'm my worst complainer-in-chief, because I'm probably my biggest active usage customer 😃

Anyway a lot of issues have been fixed. Among the updates is an update to the latest version of ACE Editor (for the Markdown editor) which have fixed a number of internal issues related to scrolling and occasional performance blips. With this version the editor is a lot more stable for performance and stability as well as providing a smoother typing experience. Compared to plain text boxes both speed and visual appearance of the editor is a joy (especially if you compare side by side).

There are a few other notable improvements:

  • New VS Code Dark Editor Theme
  • Many template improvements and style cleanups
  • New base topic icon set that works both on light and dark backgrounds
  • A new Document Outline in wide (1400px+) Web views
  • Configurable Editor Line Height (which is surprisingly useful!)
  • JSON Exports of your Help Builder Project File
  • Support for .NET 4.7 and .NET Standard Library Imports

For more detail about these updates check out the full what's new document in the docs:

So check it out. If you're upgrading from a previous major or minor version make sure you update your templates as the base templates have changed and some of the new Web view features rely on those changes.
