Hi all,

I'm starting to plan for Web Connection Training at Southwest Fox 2018 in Gilbert this fall. I've been getting a lot of requests to provide training again and at this stage I'm looking for feedback of how to structure the training as to make sure enough people show up to make it work.

More Info and Signing up

Here's the official Web Connection training page:

Planning Ahead

I'm playing with a few ideas for session format, but the one that appeals the most to me - and hopefully to you as attendees as well - is to do two day training as follows:

Day 1 - General Web Connection Training

This will be a combination of Getting Started plus new features in the framework along with a hands on demo on how to create a small application. This is similar to what I've done in years past, but every time I've done this, this is a bit different as a lot of the newer framework features are rolled into this.

We'll cover setting up your first Web Connection application, creating a few simple requests, cover how to use Templates and Scripts to manage HTML generation, how to use business objects to separate UI and business logic and along the way cover many Web specific ways to handle request processing effectively to build HTML based UIs with FoxPro. As always this day of intro is different each time covering new features and slightly improved processes along the way. Web Connection 6.0 has a lot of new features and improvements that fit into this first day profile.

Day 2 - Topic based Conference Style Sessions

My plan is to have Day 2 more of a conference style fixed length sessions that cover specific not necessarily linearly related Web Connection and Web Development topics.

These are more like conference style sessions that don't follow a pre-determined path but rather cover specific development topics of using Web Connection. Some of the sessions I've been thinking of:

  • Creating and Consuming REST Services
  • Creating Secure Web Connection Applications
  • Building and Deploying Web Connection Applications
  • Building JavaScript Client applications with Web Connection
  • Enhancing Server Side HTML Applications with VueJs

What else do you want to hear about? We're looking at 5 sessions for the second day.

Signing up or Let me know if you plan on Coming!

Putting on a conference is always a gamble - hosting a conference at a hotel is an expensive proposition and it takes a certain threshold of people to break even. Not breaking even is a very expensive proposition unfortunately. Additionally, I'm also dependent on Southwest Fox which also has a minimum number of people requirement in order for them to host their main conference - without the main conference there won't be any Web Connection Training either.

So, if at all possible it would be great if those of you interested in coming would either sign up early, or if that's just not possible leave a note here letting me know of your intent to come (no obligations of course).

The early bird deadline and also the decision time to see if the conference is a go is July 1st. Any signups that are placed before that date will be fully refundable without any penalties until the July 1st deadline or whenever after we announce that the conference will go forward.

You can sign up here:

What Do You Want To See?

It's still early and I'm still in the planning stages so any and all feedback is valuable. If you have ideas of what you want to have covered, please let me know and we'll see if it's a good fit for a session.

Please chime in - discuss...

Yes, I plan on coming to the Web Connection + SW FOX. Will be exciting.

I hope that Web Connection's training is going to take place.

Have not been at a Fox conference in 2 decades. It's time for me now, isn't it? I was last at FoxTeach 1997 in Toronto.

I like the idea of topic based sessions on Day 2 - would be interested in any or all of the topics in your tentative list.

In the past we've worked out a reduced rate for me to attend only the second day of training. I would think with this format you might want to make that a formal option. There might be a number of us who've taken the standard training but would benefit from the focused sessions...

Hi Stein,

The problem with one day attendance is that we have the room reserved regardless of number of attendees for both days. With attendance in these low numbers this is usually an expensive proposition. So even if we offered the price for the single day would be significantly more expensive than half price.

I'd argue that coming for the first day is probably worth even if you've been there many times (you've been to most I know - I think only Tore has you beat) as Day 1 is always different anyway. This year in particular there's going to be a bit more info crammed into day 1.

I like the Carl Chambers wish list. This relates to a lot of the stuff I'm doing and seeing how you handle issues is always very enlightening.

The only other topics I might add would be related to AngularJS (1.x) and Cordova but I suspect my interests here might be to specific for the group.

Not sure about SW Fox, still need to look what sessions will be offered.

Hope to see you in Oct.

I plan on attending, I would like to see a session on your:

  • AlbumViewer to ASP.NET Core 2.1 and Angular 6.0

Very much looking forward to your sessions, as they were extremely useful last time.

Thank you- Ron Mendel

AlbumViewer to ASP.NET Core 2.1 and Angular 6.0

You mean on ASP.NET Core??? That's not going to happen. I think I will probably do a session on using Angular 6.0 and use the AlbumViewer as an example.

I was referring to this:

So I would really like to continue learning what you are doing with Angular, etc.
