On Monday, October 9th, we replaced our website that I wrote 17 years ago using West Wind Web Connection with our new .NET based website. Our Web Connection based website has processed several hundred thousand orders, worth well into the nine digits. All from one web server with average page loads in the sub second range. We now have 6+ servers running the site, so we are still able to pull off what Web Connect and VFP did 😃. Regardless, hats off to you Rick, what an amazing job you've done over the years.

Kudos, ~Brett

Thanks Brett,

6 servers

I'm assuming a single server could do the job most likely - the rest is for redundancy and separation of concerns I would hope 😃

Yes. I was having a bit of fun. In actuality, we used one with the old site because scaling is difficult when you're using DBF based free tables, and it was never necessary for performance. Now that scaling out is easy, we are doing it more for redundancy than anything else. That's not to say that I'm not 99% certain that the new site would require more resources to provide the same level of performance as the old.

Regardless, the real point is, its not everyday that you find something that can so perfectly meet your needs for 17 years. And it's not just your product, it's your commitment to support, education, and your community. We've accomplished much with your product, but your partnership you offered for free along the way has been equally invaluable.

/hats off

Completely Agree - just wish Microsoft realized how much Rick has meant to so many!

And I'm not yet ready to make the switch...

Hi Brett,

Congratulations for your successful migration!

As your new system is now on rails, you may have free time to share your migration experience…

eg.

  • how large is the functional scope,
  • did you keep the same specs or restarted from a blank page,
  • did you reuse the ww server architecture (say method signatures and the like) or redraw a brand new architecture,
  • does your application use AJAX or 'traditional' HTML Forms,
  • how long did it take,
  • compared response times,
  • did you expand the team and, if so, did the team of previous application participate in coding the new one or just played a 'consultant' role,
  • what was most difficult and easiest, expected and unexpected,
  • how did you cope with evolutions during migration: applied to both systems or deferred on new one,
  • I understand it's a sales system; how did you make sure both apps behaved the same for the customer (business wise); did you have pre-defined test cases?
    …

Thanks in advance for sharing…
