I'm still using 5.x, but I'm finding that I need to be able to launch a report without holding up the live application, and polling for the resulting PDF until it is available to open.

What's the best way of doing that?

That's pretty much the best way unless you want to implement Web sockets into an application to do essentially a socket connection that notifies you when something happens on the server. But this requires that hte page stays open anyway so polling is really no different tho less efficient.
