My FAA gives the error "too many names used" and stops. I have reinstalled to no avail. What could be wrong?

When does this happen? just after startup or during which step (1, 2 or 3)?

It jumps out with the error after displaying the message "Checking newer version....." How can I completely uninstall FAA?

I doubt uninstalling can help you -- otherwise FAA is installed where the shortcut points to: Home(7) + 'ab\aw\'

you can try to increase MVCount in your VFP config.fpw

I have changed the mvcount and the error changed to 'File name is too long'. The problem actually started one day the FAA was coming up and was trying to download the latest version from your site and suddenly the internet connection got disrupted and it could not finish the download.

OK got it, you need to erase awAdapter.app and restart FAA
