Rick,

At wwc training in SWFox you suggested a service or software to manage your DNS. Can you remind me what the name was, please?

I use DnSimple which is awesome. Very easy to use, but they raised their prices recently to be a bit more pricey than I'd like.

There are other services that are similar but I would look carefully for ease of use which is one of the highlights of DnSimple.

Yikes! dnsimple pricing really sucks if you have lots of domains! Wouldn't work for me. How many domains are you needing to host?

Hi Michael. As far as we are concerned 5 domains should be enough.

I found DynDNS to be quite reliable. I switched a client to them in 2014 and we've only had that one hiccup when most of the country was down due to a DDOS attack from refrigerators and webcams.

Their pricing doesn't really look any better. Either of these will work well and reasonably priced for a few top level domains. I'm running DnSimple with 5 top domains and about 50 sub-domains and it works well. But I'm not sure that their pricing for higher domain counts is really worth it. For what these services provide it seems excessive for what's essentially a free service that domain providers and hosters provide for free.

Yes, I also use my hosting provider since these services would be way too expensive for the number of domains I host - but after a couple of major DNS outages over the past 10 years, I suggest big-boy DNS services like these to those clients that are more uptime-dependent.

DNSimple looks pretty good.

Since my latest client is already using AWS for backups, I'll be using their Route 53 DNS service for simplicity. The fewer services to administer, the better, and I know Amazon will do it's best to avoid DNS problems.

I've been using Network Solutions for over 20 years. They enrolled me into their Partners program several years ago. THe pricing per domain name depends on the top level doamin type (.com, .org., .mx, .biz, etc.) but none are above $15/year. And DNS besides registration are included in the price. Not sure what it takes to signup as a partner anymore. At this point I have about 100 domain name still registered. Never had any outages which I assume is because this was originally the start of it all and they must have a really large cable of service to the backbone. I think they are still the largest registry.

Well that's all pretty standard fare. I think I pay $11 for domain registrations, less for multi-year registrations and any domain host will also have DNS services. As long as you want to go through their DNS admin service that's fine.

The value of a company like DynDNS and DnSimple is if you need to mix many domains from different domain registrars and administer them in one place. Also most of the default Domain admin services are terrible compared to DnSimple although this is getting better. It's hard to be free compared to paying a certain amount.
