In the old world, the first step in generating the html was a tree with checkboxes. I used that to exclude a drafts/wip topic hierarchy. I'm not seeing that in DM's generate dialog. Is the recommended workflow to check the "Don't Render Topic" option in the topic editor? If so, is it necessary to check all the children of a parent or is setting this at the parent level sufficient?

No if you exclude the parent the children won't render in the generated output.
